Arthouse

A few weeks ago I went to the Arthouse “free night” that coincided with the Christmas Carol Sing-a-long on the Capitol steps. Along for the ride were two friends, who both were trained in art and architecture. We had a blast touching the art, sitting on the art, exploring the architecture (which included a “floating” wall which could be rearranged to accommodate different showings), and indulging our general curiosity. We squealed over the floating wall, pondered the woodwork steps/desk/wall, and got jealous over the cork loft.

It was a little like being a kid again and discovering something totally new and exciting. And isn’t that what art is about? Discovery. Exploration. Emotion.

But what impressed me the most was the laid back atmosphere. Most galleries are all about snobbery, being quiet, and come with a “don’t touch that” mentality. Arthouse was kid-friendly, touch-friendly, and the gallery docents were exceptionally nice.

The upstairs installation was of tables, chairs, and glass dishware – all found objects. The majority of the tables and chairs were created from materials stripped from the building during its remodel.

Water bottles hanging from the ceiling - fun and whimsical

Stairs to the cork loft

Shadows created by the woodwork - which starts at the second flood ceiling, becomes stairs to the first floor, then turns into the information desk!

Sorry for grainy photos – shots taken with iPhone.
